Mistakes Worth Making
What do you think of when you hear the word mistake? "It was a mistake." "They made a mistake." "It was my mistake." Is "mistake" a positive or negative term in your personal vocabulary? Contrary to popular belief, mistakes can be very helpful as you work toward your personal and professional dreams and goals. Does that surprise you? I am always telling my clients, "It is not a mistake -- unless you don't learn from it." Mistakes can be powerful learning tools and can boost your growth significantly. So "mistakes" are opportunities in disguise. Think about it: How many truly great down hill skiers stay on their skis the first several years of their training? How many great skaters never fall on the ice as they are getting started, or later on, as they are trying new and innovative techniques? Probably not many. The reality is that those skiers and skaters (and entrepreneurs, writers, and musicians) that are overly concerned about getting things right the first time rarely become truly great. Often our desire to be perfect at what we are doing gets in the way of us becoming truly great at it. So ask yourself:
How do you view your "mistakes"? Do you want to be truly great at what you do? In what specific ways can you reconsider your "mistakes" and see them as learning opportunities? Are you willing to risk falling down a lot to achieve true greatness? Miles Davis said, "Do not fear mistakes. There are none."
See what happens if you keep that in mind this month.
